HTA Quarterly Fall 2020 | Heard on the Street

The first batches of COVID-19 vaccines should go to “people most at risk of infection,” such as medical staff on the front lines or transport sector workers, not just in all EU countries, but internationally. But “we [countries] shouldn't fight each other. We should make it available community-wise, not country-wise ... I feel strongly about this,” said Guido Rasi, head of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), speaking on the importance of a global, coordinated approach to vaccine deployment.
The World Health Organization is tracking 26 candidate vaccines in clinical evaluation and 139 candidate vaccines in preclinical evaluation. Recent price and volume agreements include:
Pfizer/BioNTech:
- Prices vaccine for the US at approximately $20/dose as the US government signs agreement to pay for $1.95 billion upon receipt of the first 100 million doses.
- UK agrees to buy 30 million doses, and upon approval, Japan would be provided 120 million vaccine doses (pricing and details not given).
Sanofi/GlaxoSmithKline:
- Prices vaccine for the US at approximately $21/dose as the US government signs agreement to pay $2.1 billion for 100 million doses and the ability to purchase up to 500 million doses over time.
